Top 10 Beer Gardens
to Visit before the end
of Deadlines

NEWS BY Kate Bunney

With summer just around the corner and the nights getting that bit longer, students are gagging for an excuse to get to the beer garden. If you’re based in Glasgow, here are a few options you might have heard of, and a few hidden gems for you to try out. Happy celebrating those deadline hand-ins!

1. WEST on the Green

Based in the old carpet factory near The People’s Palace, this beer garden is arguably the best one to take advantage of the sun all day. Serving a full range of German-style beers, there is something for everyone. Accompanied by traditional foods in the Bierhall, such as schnitzel and bratwurst, what's not to like?

Student-friendly review: "Might not be your regular as pints are around the £6 mark, but as a treat for you and your pals, it is worth a visit!"

Located: 15 Binnie Place, G40 1AW

2. Brodies

This is an underrepresented beer garden, but based right next to Queens Park in the Southside, the vibes are immaculate here. A bar and kitchen which serves all your classics and a hearty food menu, this place is perfect for a trip to the southside. Maybe you could visit the shops, have a walk in the park, and accidentally end up in the beer garden.

Student-friendly review: "No student prices, sadly, but pretty reasonable overall."

Located: 777 Pollokshaws Road, G41 2AX

3. THE ARK

Located right off George Square, and conveniently walkable from Strathclyde University, City of Glasgow College and Glasgow Caledonian University, this might be one of the ultimate student beer gardens in Glasgow. This pub offers student deals through the MIXR app, meaning that pints and spirit-mixers in the sun come to only £3 per drink.

Student-friendly review: "Very, very, very student-friendly. Also note that the same MIXR deals are available at their sister pubs, Walkabout and The Merchant, both in the city centre."

Located: 42 North Frederick Street, G1 2BS

4. The Record Factory

The Record Factory is a staple of Byres Road and rightly so, the beer garden is a suntrap with its own bar outside for easy drinks access. This one gets busy especially during the warmer months, so it is recommended to book a table in advance. Also, this is a perfect stop for the Kelvinhall subcrawl stop, just a minute away from the stop. So, keep it in mind for your next subcrawl in the sun!

Student-friendly review: Pricing wise it is what you’d expect from that part of the city, but their house lager is £4.50, and cocktails are from £9 so not the worst for students.

Located: 17 Byres Road, G11 5RD

5. Nakodar Grill

Now this is a wee bit of a rogue one, as this is primarily a restaurant serving excellent Indian dishes in the East End of Glasgow, but this is one of the hidden gems that can’t be kept a secret. Located around the side of the restaurant, there is a cosy beer garden to soak up the sun. There are limited drink choices, but pints are on tap and what better than a pint and a curry in the sun?

Student-friendly review: Very reasonable and a good spot to add to your East End rotation of bars.

Located: 13 Annfield Place, G31 2XQ

6. The Duke Bar

Staying in the East End, we have The Duke Bar, right across from Duke Street train station. This one is a very popular hit with the locals, especially in the summer, with their small beer garden at the front. If you get there early enough in the day, you can make the most of the sun before it sets behind the buildings.

Student-friendly review: This is one of the cheapest places in the East End with a beer garden, offering great value pints. There are no student prices, but honestly, they don’t need one!

Located: 631 Duke Street, G31 1QA

7. The Locale

This bar is a popular spot in Charing Cross with a vast beer garden. They serve an Americana-inspired menu alongside quality cocktails, beer cocktails and all the classics on tap. They are also conveniently located next to the Berkeley Suite, and near the Garage if either of those fits your vibe.

Student-friendly rating: Not the friendliest for the student budget, but on Taco Tuesday, they offer £3 tequila and £6 margaritas, which sounds pretty great in the sun.

Located: 241 North Street, G3 7DL

8. Drygate

This popular place is right next to the Tennent’s Brewery, surely meaning it is one of the freshest pints you can get, no? There are obviously the main bar and kitchen, but also the Peaks Terrace, which makes the most of the limited Glasgow sun we get, serving 23 rotational pints and beer flights. Walkable from the city centre, you could also book in for the Tennent’s Factory Tour and learn about the history of the nation's favourite beer.

Student-friendly review: A pint will set you back at least £5, but the location and experience are worth the hit.

Location: 85 Drygate, G4 0UT

9. Vodka Wodka - Ashton Lane

Based in the infamous Ashton Lane, this is the picturesque place to get your pint. The beer garden out the back is open all year round, prepared for any type of weather with shelters and heaters if needed. They run promo deals from Sunday-Thursday with house lager for £4, selected cocktails for £5 and spirit mixers for £3.50. With possibly some of the best deals in that part of town, it's worth a visit for sure.

Student-friendly review: A very affordable day/night out, especially if you make use of the weekday deals.

Location: 31 Ashton Lane. G12 8SJ

10. Church on the Hill

This beer garden based in the Southside is a perfect spot for taking in the views of Queens Park and getting a bit of sunshine (or rain). This is a great spot for sports watching, and it has a vast range of beers to enjoy while watching your favourite team. Make the most of their weekday deals, and if you end up staying late for the pub quiz on a Tuesday, you'll have a great night out.

Student-friendly review: It is a little bit on the pricy side, with pints in the £6 region but this is worth a visit for the atmosphere alone.

Location: 16 Algie Street, G41 3DJ
